Has goal setting with your class become a futile chore ?

Updated: Jan 15, 2019

At the start of the year you guide your class through the process of goal setting. Why?

We all do it for New Years Resolutions, right? We make a goal and promise ourselves we will stick to it. Do we ever actually accomplish our goals? Most of us don't. Then why do we go teach the same exercise to our teens?

It is time to learn, unlearn and relearn goal setting from Gabriele Oettingen and WOOP my life.

Until I discovered WOOP planning I had been teaching my class SMART goals: Simple, Measurable, Achievable and Timed. Well, that is the one of the many versions available for SMART goals. However, after reading Gabriele Oettingen's research on WOOP planning I changed my goal setting lessons.

In my lessons I used the student friendly amazing resources (written and video) that guide you through the process on http://woopmylife.org/woop-1/ and https://www.characterlab.org/woop

So what is WOOP?

WOOP stems from 20 years of research based on positive psychology. WOOP scientifically combines Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intentions to help us achieve goals.

It is a simple process of visiualising your goal, visualising your obstacles and planning accordingly.

How do we use WOOP?

It is a 4 step process:

WISH - OUTCOME - OBSTACLE - PLAN

Are you ready to WOOP?

Let Gabriele Oettingen talk you through the process.

HAPPY WOOPING!
